An Italian firm has just launched a new type of helmet that not only redefines one size fits all, but takes custom fit to an entirely new level.

Manufacturer Tucano Urbano claims their radical new product is the world's first inflatable helmet. It uses 12 separate air chambers that can be individually filled to create a perfect fit, a process that can be completed in a matter of minutes, thus allowing the helmet to be deflated and stored when not riding.

The outer material of the inflating helmet is a special high abrasion and impact resilient polymer that has already passed the rigorous EC helmet testing standards. However, just as with traditional helmets, it is a one time use design and will require replacement in the event of an impact or abrasion type accident.

Initially the only model that will be available is an open-face design as the company's main target is the extremely large scooter market in Europe. A full-face helmet is not likely to become available given the problems that would arise with the proper fitment of a visor, and the complications of air flow through the helmet. Other open-face designs are being considered.

The new air-helmet will be available in Europe as of May 1st. No information was given regarding North American availability as the helmet has not yet been subjected to DOT or SNELL testing.

You're really supposed to make April Fools jokes before noon; at least according to my grandmother.
