View Full Version : Reader's Rides
Every forum has one except ours. There's no "Readers' Rides" here. So I'm starting one. Given the target audience's generally cantankerous nature, I've named it "Crotchety Rockets", but don't let that stop more chipper posters from adding their current love, past favourite or lost wonder rides. Post your pics of the ones that matter.
I've chosen my recently completed VTR avec fairing lower in luxurious "Phantom Grey Metallic" (the closest match I could find to the wheels and engine casings). Thanks to those who offered encouragement (see "Pimp my Ride" elsewhere) and please accept my apologies to those whose advice I did not take, which was just about everybody. "Paint it all Yellow", indeed.
Also visible is the right LSR Frame Slider (vis. yellow blob amidships), another recent addition. Solidly built, easy to install once you realize the main brace has an "up" and a "down" and won't work if they're installed incorrectly (note to instructions writer: please note this in your notes), which I hope never to test.
So c'mon. Show us your stuff. Let's see that blinged-out V-Strom, that Rat Bike, that Yellow Ducati and that, um, whatever.

OK, so I was one of those who suggested to "Paint it all Yellow". I stand corrected, it looks great with the darker colour that matches the rims. I guess this is why I let my wife pick the colours and I just apply it to the walls.
Most on this forum should be aware that my current ride is a '97 Honda ST1100 as it appears as my avatar above. I am attaching a larger version of that photo, plus a shot of how it looked before I added the higher shield, Corbin seat and Givi top box. I love riding this bike because it is so smooth and comfortable you can tool along at 120 all day.

Thanks, Malks, I'm glad you like it.
As for your increasingly modified ride, let me warn you (as if this hasn't already occurred to you): I had a K1100RS, and wanted it to be more comfortable. So, I added a taller screen. And a Throttlemeister. And a Top Case to increase capacity (and keep my new wife from falling off the back). She rode more with these added items, so all was good. Then we stopped by the dealer one day and she noticed the K12LT. "Look how much more room there is for my purse!" she cried. I now own the K12LT.
Forewarned is forearmed, supposedly. "Smooth and comfortable"? I'm thinking there's a 'Wing in your future...

Thanks Ken,
Me too, but I've owned her about 15 or so years and I do dream of the day when I go modern. But then what would I tinker with? Maybe the little Yamaha.
I'd even consider selling the Kawi if I knew it was going to a fellow enthusiast.
But then I'd probably regret it. Just yesterday someone stopped traffic for a second to snap a picture of me on it at a red, then green light. That puts a smile on my face and it wouldn't happen on something KawaYamaZukiHon.
But then what would I tinker with?
It needs bar end mirrors.
Ditch the moose antlers.

Thanks. No, the mirrors work great. Like most things Ducati they needed a little tweaking (replacement of the bar inserts to keep the mirrors from repositioning themselves in the wind), but even with the stock setup vibration was not an issue. The mirrors are one of the things that most impressed me when I test rode the bike - excellent, elbow-free rearward view, very different from the SS.

I'll give you one old one, and the current one. Last bike was a 1996
VFR750, which I spent way to much money upgrading. But it was a great bike. I put lots of km's on it and had it to quite a few trackdays. Met lots of great folks through the VFR. And given the right circumstances, and finding the owner I would even consider buying it back. Then I would have two bikes......... the wife would love that.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/DennisHussey/PICT0285.jpg
Current ride is a 2004 Hayabusa, which is the best bike I have owned. Most people think I baught it becuase.... worlds fastest blah blah. But that wasn't the main reason. When looking for a bike after the VFR I made a list of the things that I wanted, at least 1000cc, full fairing, fuel injected, adjustable suspension, great handling, good two up capability. So it kind of made a short list. CBR1100 was on there but the front end isn't adjustable.
Not too much done to it. Puig screen, GI Pro ATRE and gear indicator, Vance and Hines pipes, Braided front lines (which I still have to put on) and a cool sticker :D.

SP? it is ohlin's, came stock. actually, the bike's almost entirely stock, 'cept for braided brake lines, paint, flush-mount signals & windscreen. kinda hard (& expensive) to find performance mods for that old a bike. and, truthfully...it doesn't really need any. just rolled over 15K at the end of last year.

Nice bike, looks like a '79 or '80. I had an '83 for a short time, it was a pretty bike, in black/wine two tone, with a gloss black finish on the engine. It was simply too much bike for me at the time, and I ended up getting something smaller and sportier. The GS850G was possibly the finest standard ever built.

Yes, it's a 1979. I had one new in 1979, a black one. Rode it for 38,000kms in just under 3 years and traded it in on a new GS1100E.
We plan on riding this one to Niagara Falls on our 30th wedding anniversay next spring. That's repeating the trip we made on our honeymoon. I know the same motels are still there in Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie and we plan on staying at them.

The GS850G was possibly the finest standard ever built.
+1. An '82 was my first bike, and it was awesome. They should have just stopped designing seats at that point, and put the seat from that bike on every other standard or sport tourer made for the rest of time.

So true! Bikes are so amazing, and so good today, I cannot understand why most bikes of the last 15-20 years don't have very good seats. I would be horrified if my '05 Dakota was as uncomfortable as my Dad's '73 Chevy! What's up with motorcycles? I have not ridden or even sat on 10% of the bikes available today, but I am willing to bet most would not come close to the comfort offered by Suzuki back in the day. I could give up some styling and performance for a superior seat that can match what was available in the 80's!

I've got some updated information on our 1986 Suzuki GSXR1100. After many, many years, my infinitely skilled buddy has completed the "A" motor for our GSXR. It's been broken in and tuned on the dyno. Would you believe 147hp at the rear wheel and 84 ft/lbs of torque? That's plenty stout! Can't wait until spring. According the numbers, when we overlay the torque curves with our 2001 and 2006 GSXR 1000's, the old 1100 should pull away nicely in any sort of "roll-ons". For comparison, our 2001 and the 2006 GSXR 1000's make about 75 ft/lbs of torque.

I'm jealous as hell. That is my all time favourite bike (model and year!) in the world, bar none. I know you have had it since new, and I salute you for keeping it in such great shape.

This was last September at Toronto Motorsports Park. First track day ever. Brother was with me, but not much of a photographer, so no action shots!
Working on fitting up some 3-spoke Brembo wheels with DOT race rubber (and no tubes!) for this season. Need a slipper clutch too. But really, the bike works pretty well on the track as is, at least for a slow old guy.

Couple hints, if you're going to have dedicated track wheels, try out the pirelli red stripes. They're slicks, but intended for endurance racing or serious track addicts, no warmers required to boot. If you're still starting out on the track, a good set of full sport tires can take you to 75% of race pace and last waaay longer than most any race tire, and deal with different conditions better. A poor mans slipper clutch, even on a duc, is to bump the idle up, just a guess for a classic would be around 2500 (check forums for better info, or keep notes). The higher idle doesn't let the engine drop as quick between unmatched shifts and keeps things from hopping out back.

Thanks for the ideas! I had never considered the red stripes - I assumed all slicks needed warmers - so I'll look into those before buying the track rubber.
I had M3s on last year, which are pretty close to full sport street rubber.
Yes I am just starting out, but I am already in that no-man's land where the novice group is really too slow and frustrating, but I am several seconds off what guys in intermediate are running. I definitely want to push the pace a little so I can eventually run comfortably in intermediate without being a pylon. The M3s are fine at my current pace, but I see the better rubber as a way to gain a bit of insurance as I try to go faster.
Regarding the slipper, my big problem is that I tend to downshift at too high an rpm, given the machine I am on. I don't think bumping the idle is going to make a difference there - I already blip to match revs, but there is just too much engine braking once the clutch is out again. Maybe I just need to learn to wait longer into the braking before going down to the next gear. But, it's a hard habit to break! Anyway, no hopping - just a lot of squirming.
Probably a good riding school would be the best possible investment!

Sport Rider page 30 of Aprill issue did a good write up on the Pirelli Diablo Superbike Pro Slick, aka red stripe. They got 400 miles, over 50 heat cycles, tread left, and close to full out race pace. A school is a great way to start the season, gets rid of last years bad habits before you have a chance to remember them.

I'm going to see how long they'll last me for a race season, pirelli's run much lower pressures too, so check with your trackside support for specific location recommendations. I'll be pestering McBain to no end.

Somehow to me, calling it "My Ride" indicates some sort of exclusivity, rarity and beauty to the bike that many of above pictures clearly demonstrate.
My current bikes on the otherhand represent the other side of the spectrum. Generally plain, stock, a dime a dozen and Yes, even...Ugly. But to me they are worth their weight in Gold (well maybe copper) but they never cease to put a smile on my face.

That looks pretty good in black, I wonder if black bikes "look better in the shade" too? Looks like they saved money on the tires! I haven't seen those bridgestones for a long time!

They saved money in a few spots. But I was actually impressed with the tires, were these not considered a decent model? They have held well (I have no chicken strips on the front and very little on the back) and 17,000 km and I am just getting to the wear bars now. (My Buell ate tires at an alarming rate)
I have panned the Hyosung a few times but really, for $6k new, it does everthing I expect of it and a few things I didn't.
Speaking of tires, on the KLR pictured, I had just switched to very street type tires before leaving Canada. Now that I am in Western Oz ( they call us Sand Gropers here) I have completely the wrong type of tires again. They run pure dirt style tires but after getting stuck up to the axle a few times I would consider paddles!

Just purchased a 2010 Yamaha FJR1300 with 5,200 kms on it. Bought it from a friend of mine who has ordered a Yamaha Super Tenere. Took a crappy picture inside our garage. Can't wait to get it out to some scenic destinations.

How long before you rebadge it a Suzuki?

Nice, I know that some of the FJR forums all recommend a mile high windhshield, but I know of 2 guys that went with a much shorter one than stock and both prefer it. Keep in mind both came from sport bikes and not other ST's. I've also seen one of those in a shop getting an 80,000km valve check and none were out of spec, nor were they for the 40k either!

My last ride was an '04 FJR. I've documented the excessive engine heat and non comfy seat issues I've had but I've been told that both were fixed on later models. A really fun bike to ride for sure! Congrats.

The tires and brakes of the day still couldn't handle what the engine and frame were giving them anyway. Tubing was still pretty strong for what they dealt with. The megaphone pipe and stretched swingarm says to me this is one built for some straight line work.

It would be interesting to know how it does in the 1/4. Definitely a classic drag bike.

Built over a 10 year period from my mostly BMW parts bin. Powered by a 953cc three cylinder Daihatsu liquid cooled diesel. Fuel tank and seat are temporary. 105 (s)miles per gallon. A real blast to ride. Lives in Eastern Ontario.

I had to send this picture off to a friend in Canada, he is nuts for anything with a diesel!
Except for perhaps the fuel tank, the bike looks purpose built from some European factory! Great job.
