Gift of Life

Sitting on my desk is a small pin. It is a gold plated Gift of Life pin. For anyone who hasn't seen one before, it's about the size of a cuff-link. It has a white trillium on a green ribbon, with the words Gift of Life inscribed on it. These pins are a way of spreading the word to others that you support the donation of your organs, in event of your death, to those who are in dire need. And with your selfless contribution, a part of you may live on in those recipients, and in this way it becomes a legacy of monumental proportions, unmatched by any other means.

I received my pin while at Fast Eddie's funeral, July of last year. Ed was an advocate of spreading the Gift of Life word. I intend to wear my pin more often, and especially at tribute rides and get-togethers.

I urge you all, to sign (and have witnessed) both portions of the form that comes with your license renewal (or can be picked up at any health care facility). Keep one in your wallet, and give the other to your next of kin. It is important to make your wishes known to your loved ones, that even if you have signed the form indicating your desire to donate, that they too know your wishes as they will have the last word.

You wouldn't believe the number of lives, both young and old, that could be saved or made better if more of us supported this selfless act.
