I got home from the Sportbike Rally on Sunday afternoon, What a hoot. Talked to Toz, Hank (chatted about his `busa and I`m beginning to see the light), the lovely Brenda from C.C. who sweet talked me into another two years and Jordan Szoke who is without doubt a class act. By the way for anyone who hasn`t met Toz, he`s the one with the big smile and the ugliest shirt in Ontario. Apart from that lot the rally brought new acquaintances and good conversation with every stop. It struck me to be a bit like dogs meeting in the park, lots of big grins and tail wagging but checking out each others bikes instead of that smelly dog thing.
I took in the poker run, the thunder run and one beer store run. A guy on a BMW in the beerstore parking lot wanted to buy my old VFR but as it was late in the day I`m thinking it might not of been his first visit. The poker run, my thanks to the guy who planned it out, great job, was worth the trip down to Parry sound in itself. This guy, Serge, was at the first checkpoint at the same time as me and we decided to ride together as neither of us knew the area very well. My friendship with Serge seemed destined to end abruptly soon after the second card stop when my new buddy nearly got creamed twice within about a mile. First time he tried to pass three cars on a short straight just before a left hand turn and would have made it the car coming around the corner toward him hadn`t of forced him into the gap behind the lead car. Lots of brake lights going on I tells ya. It wasn`t long before I got passed the cars and came up behind Serge in time time to see him setting up for another left hander just as a truck came round the corner on the wrong side of the road passing a cyclist. Old Serge never missed a beat, he didn`t even brake, just took the 3ft of pavement left to him and made the turn. I had been less than impressed with his earlier maneuver but the second one made up for it. When we stooped for another card he didn`t even mention his encounters, so neither did I. On the 141 sreach I took over as lead man and with Serge behind me I must confess to getting a little velocified myself and wore the chicken strips on my tires down to a respectable size. By the way ended up with a pair of jacks and queen high.
After the poker run it was supper and into line for the ride through town. There was lots of bikes in the run but seemed to be just as many lined up along the route watching the fun. O.K. I guess but it seemed odd to me.
I was up early on Sunday morning, for me anyway, 7.30 so instead of heading back up 69 to Sudbury I took 124 for a relaxed ride to Sundridge then on to North Bay for breakfast. After that it was a quick blast East on 17 and home to the land of half tons and Harleys. Oh well only two weeks until Canadian Superbike racing at Mosport.
