View Full Version : Info on 1992 Suzuki GSX1100G model???
Hey! Looking to buy this used bike and was wondering if anyone has FIRST HAND experience/knowledge of this model. I am a mature seasoned rider (59) and have been absent from biking 8 years, time to get back into it, huh? Any help is appreciated. Bike has 53,000kms and he is asking $2,500.00 from pics looks mint, about to go see it.

I looked at those REALLY carefully when they came out - pretty rare model now since it was really a sales flop. Not sure why exactly. The Bandit 1200 was their second attempt at the concept (minus the shaft drive) and it obviously went over well.
Sorry, no first hand experience, but the motor is about as well proven as any motor can be. It's a lovely thing with tappet valve adjusters so you can adjust clearances without any shims. Also, Suzuki had many many years of making anvil-reliable shaft drives before that one so I wouldn't have concerns there. A weak point for Suzukis of that vintage was the coils - especially, the cheapy low tension leads would rot off the back of them.
Good luck!
Hey thanks for the info; I figured the motor had to be bullet proof along with the shaft drive. I went and saw the bike and it is MINT. Does have the usual scuffs and small scratches, but overall nice shape and never down. Shouls pass safety without a fuss. Biggest would be a rear tire after this years season.
ANYONE else out there knowing anything at all about this bike the info would be gratefully read. Thanks., Phil.

Thanks to all who helped me out in my decision...I am picking it up tomorrow! A little excited after 8 years without a bike...59 years old and still can get....
I worked out an awesome deal, the mint bike with 55,000kms; helmet, jacket, cover, rain suit, tank bag, corbin seat and stock, rear luggage rack and passanger support all for $2,500.00! What do you think?

Sounds like a great deal to me. Make sure you report back with a little review for us once you have ridden it a bit.

I pride myself on being a "bike guy" but I do not remember this bike at all. I had to google it! Not too bad at all but I think I like the lines of the Bandit a bit more.

This is a good read:
http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/suzu/suzuki_gsx1100g%2091.htm
I'd forgotten about the lazy steering geometry on these things. That's one thing they definitely changed with the first Bandit 1200. What I do remember though is the handlebar setup which for me seemed too high, and the slightly overdone chome-iness of the grips and switchgear (too touring; not enough sport). Of course the handlebars are easily swapped out with whatever height and bend suits.
The styling kind of strikes me as an evolutionary stage between the old Katana and the first Bandit. A sort of missing link.
The engine of course rocks.
Ok, it is in my garage and all shined up, (not much needed tho), couple of quick rides, (as no legal plate or Ins yet!). Strongly agree bars are way too high, know anywhere to find some lower bars cheap? Had to remove the HIGHWAY pegs...haaaa! Took off the crash bars and just applied last coat of paint to them, remount tomorrow. Just had to remove the SISSY gar with storage rack, not my taste at all...down the road will look for some after market slip ons or headers too, just too quiet for me. Yes the motor is super strong! Fun to take it up to 80 - 90k and roll the power on...wow! Sure climbs up to speeds that I will explore more with Ins and a legal plate. It is not a Super Bike by no means but I think it will be great on long hauls this fall when I will have the time. My days of going into corners as fast as my ability allows are past I think...I am 60 in April! Question: I have always used Synthetic oil in my bikes, this one used regular high quality by past owner. Thoughts on switching now to synthetic? I want to do oil/filter right away. Thanks again to all who read my thoughts, Phil.

Synthetic won't hurt anything but your pocketbook at this point. If it's high miles already then sticking with good quality mineral oil will work just fine. It was designed to run on the stuff and was made before synthetic was, so...
Thanks for the info; I will stay with a top quality non-synthetic oil.
TEST DRIVE: I live just outside of Port Loring which is about an hour south of North Bay up here in northern Ontario. For the last 2 years they have been repaving our 80 some km Hwy #522 to Hwy #11 at Trout Creek, from there you have 4 lanes to Toronto and north to N.Bay. Well Wednesday after reinstalling the freshly painted crash bars I topped up the gas tank and ventured east to find the last stretch of very fresh Hwy. They were still painting the lines on! Everything I have read, here and other links say this Suzuki is a big heavy slug and very top heavy and an overall Ho-Hum bike...well this is my 7th bike since 1974 beginning with a Honda 550, two 750 Suzuki's, (an 84 and a 78), a shaft drive XS1100 Yamaha and a 2001 Triumph Bonneville. (I am also presently rebuilding a Suzuki GS650). This Suzuki out performs them all.
At first I took my time on the empty highway approaching the so smooth winding corners (a bit cautiously for me), trying to detect any bad habits of my new Suzuki. It felt well planted, stable, no head shakking and tracked smoothly and without any white knuckled exits. The brakes were tested in the event of a deer jumping out and the really bring you to a simple worry free complete stop with no problem. The bars ARE too high but I was able to twist my way through without incident keeping the speed around 100 - 110 most of the way, except on the corner exits...God it is fun to twist the throttle and feel the g force turn you into handle bar streamers!
At Trout Creek I stopped and had a drink before the u-turn for my return trip home. Well about 10 kms in I saw flashing lights ahead, damn and me without Ins/valid plate, (I put on an old one from 05), he had a yellow VW pulled over as i swished quietly by. Next turn I figured that he may be coming shortly along to check me out, so I let the Suzuki open up and get me home quick. Now that was fun, leaning her over and twisting the throttle much harder than I had coming east! She went into the corners 40-50 kms over the posted limits without a complaint, hiccuup, or head shake. I felt at home and relaxed. Not too confident yet as this is when we can get into trouble. I thought out the curves and stayed alert, an eye on my rear view mirrors for any flashing lights.
Well, I made it home with no negative happenings/thoughts of my latest bike. She is big, comfy, strong, has the old school look I like and handles well for my skill, what more can I ask for $2,500.00???
UYes the Ins and plate will be on Monday, thanks for sharing my thoughts, Phil.

There was a link to Northern Lights Resort at the end of your post.
Derreck has the thankless task of yanking spammers off this board (and there are many) so "commerce"-oriented stuff gets erased as a matter of course.
But don't let that slow you down. If you won't stop for the police Derreck shouldn't faze you at all.

Who, what, me....never!!!
Ok sorry about that, I did not realize I was even doing it. I sure did not come on here to promote my business, (habit). I guess I was just letting you guys know who I was, it surely won't happen again.
I guess I was also hoping to have met some fellow motorcyclists who shared a passion and similar thoughts on riding and ways to improve a ride. This is something I have really missed these past 8 years and apparently still do...

No hard feelings Phil. Just making sure that your legit. As you wander around the form you will see some spam every once and awhile. As a motorcyclist your welcome and now that in fact we all know your legit you may get some business! Advertise away.
WEll "Caper" Mr. "bike - guy"...there are some hard feelings.
I came on here to gain some information on this bike i was buying, as to me it was a model I was not familiar with either. I had hoped also to talk with fellow motorcyclists about their rides, good roads, experiences and I received very little.
Yellow Duck was helpful and even steered me towards TD Ins which has proven the best, so not all was a loss. Thankyou.
But some others seem to be just rude moorons.
Calling me a "spammer" just because I added my website address after my name purely out of habit. It is who I am and I never intended to "advertise" on here. AND trying to make me out to be an idiot..."Who, what, me....never!!!" I don't need that, this or you "Couch - Bikers"... Oh sorry "Couch - Motorcyclists!"
You know I have been riding since 1974, have had now my 7th bike, ridden more miles than most, met great people along the way, never had a bad experience in any province or state..but I come onto Cycle Canada's web site forum area to gain some first hand knowledge of this bike I now own and get treated like this.
I guess this is the same type of "Motorcyclists" not "Bikers" Caper, which turned me off Cycle Canada and cancel my subscription after 30 years too.
I miss real people here like Bruce Reeve and Max Burns. Luckly Max lives up here in Northern Ontario and through mutual friends, (Bikers), is now is a friend too who shares some of my favorite roads up here, like freshly paved Hwy #522 to Trout Creek, you know the one I spoke of and received not a comment, even though I was asked to share my first hand knowledge after a ride.
So if ever you are in the neighbourhood, don't pull into my "UN-NAMED" place of business as I would only make you feel as unwelcomed as I do on here...ride on by please...my business is fine without the likes of you.
Advertise away.
Actually, please don't. It'll only encourage all the aluminum wallet vendors and hairpiece hawkers and porn producers and we really don't need that, do we? Plus it'll make Derreck grumpy. Have a heart. Stick to bikes. Ta.

...and now that he`s left the forum I can tell you about my "FIRST HAND" experience with the Suzuki 1100G.
I think it was `92 or `93 that I nearly bought one from my local dealer but I pulled out at the eleventh hour and have been thankful of my good judgement ever since. Even now I don`t know what I was thinking. I had owned a GPZ750 for years and all was right in the world untill my riding buddy bought a FJR1100 which threw me into a tailspin and hence the 1100G debacle. I ended up buying a very nice used ZX10 and all the planets realigned.

There was a link to Northern Lights Resort at the end of your post.
It's almost impossible to imagine why people are so offended by a simple link at the end of an obviously valid post. Admins and others jump all over it the second they see it while it has absolutely no ill effect on anyone whatsoever.
Admin has no right to edit anyone's valid post without permission, regardless of forum policy.

Forum rules and guidelines clearly state that advertisements will be removed, no exceptions. The usual procedure is to delete the entire post, but as I agree that Phil's post was "valid", I chose to "edit" it by removing the link he inadvertently added.
I'd prefer not to have to do that, but unfortunately a lot of spam appears on the forum -- I often find myself deleting spam and banning the offenders three or more times a day -- so there has to be zero tolerance policy.

I'll say it again for the record I had no problem with the advert if he was a legit rider as it appears he was. As for his rant on my tag(motorcyclist vs. biker). Combined we all don't have enough time to argue that one out before we're done on this world!

A poster innocently puts his biz link on his sig (as I often do in accepted places). dman removes the tag and rightfully and fairly allows dialogue to remain. Artfully handled by forum admin.
So what happens? Shit hits fan. Laker alienates another much needed newbie to forum. Questions about rules are raised.

What have I done now? All I said was that I came that close to buying one but pulled out of the deal at the last minute. It was Caper and dman01 who tried to ruin the guy`s business and take away his livelihood.

Musing over the thread, I can see some confusion and comments made that in light of SUBSEQUENT clarification by Phil and Derek were off the mark. Then things settled down and became relatively civilized. But Phil's apparent continuing bitterness has made me wonder if maybe his underlying aim was indeed to promote his business by including a link. If he has left in a huff, was it because of a few comments on the forum, or because he couldn't include the link?
Just had to replace the seal in the rear hub of my K75. You'd think with their prices BMW would make something that could last longer than 16 years, 252,000km! :) The brake pads were oil soaked but it turned out there was very little meat left on them anyway.

You my friend are hilarious. "Take away his livelihood". My point was if you post an advert, which he did, own up to it. Don't try and take the "out of habit" road. If he had been stopped for speeding with no insurance or license would the cop have let him go if he had said he was "riding fast out of habit"? Good on him for trying to promoting his business that he's obviously proud of but don't play the "I didn't realize I was doing it" card. Like you I'm sure he knew exactly what he was doing.

Caper, I really do not know what your problem is...I came on here looking for some simple advice and got a bit...I took what I read and with my own experience and my own opinions I bought a bike...then I closed off a post with whom I am (and proud of it), ....I did not and never thought I was "ADVERTISING" myself or my business, it was done as I have stated "out of habit".
Why oh why are you turning this into some 12 year old playground quarelling? Grow up and go for a ride...that is where I will be on my newest bike and having fun and enjoying life.
To ease your mind I will never come into this forum ever again, so as far as I am concerned we are done.
And if anyone else doubts if I actually bought this bike or whom I am my phone number is toll free at 888 387 9991 and you can speak to me in person like a man and not some winey spoiled baby.

When you`re retired it`s nice to be able to do things on a whim so today I rode 700km just to mend some fences and I`m glad to report mission accomplished. I met up with Phil and I must say that he came across as a first rate guy who is genuinely disappointed by the way things went. Whether he returns I couldn`t say but I hope so as he would undoubtably bring some interesting points of view to the forum. I liked the way he talked about his new pride and joy and the way he made sure that I didn`t miss his project bike, another Suzuki that he is busy rebuilding in his garage.
